BLOG: Alta Woods Love

So, this summer, I’m up here at good ole’ MC taking summer classes. (That’s what happens sometimes when you switch majors.) Little did I know, God had much bigger plans for my summer than just taking some courses here on campus.

I have this wonderful best friend named Amanda, whose family was so kind enough to let me live with them in Richland. We became besties through Orientation my freshman year in 2010. (So those of you about to attend Orientation, watch out! You could meet a best friend or two!)

Anyhoo, Amanda has been a huge part of this ministry called Alta Woods the past year and half or so, and I have seen her grow so much not only as a person, but also in her faith. Every time she brought it up, I was excited to not only hear about how much she was getting to serve within this ministry but also to hear about how much the ministry was impacting her.

So, Alta Woods is this inner-city church in south Jackson that has so many children attending who don’t exactly come from the best homes. Even more vitally, many of them have never heard of God’s love for them.

The minute these kids step through the Alta Woods door at 6pm, you can just see them light up. They have a place where they can be themselves, know they’ll be loved on, and for once, have positive expectations from others so that they’ll grow. That, for us college students, presents the incredible opportunity to share God’s word with them and tell them about  Jesus.

Because the ministry has had such a positive response from the kids in the community, we have added an extra service during the week, once on Tuesday nights for the little kids and Wednesday nights for the youth. We call the ministry “SWAG”- or Saved With Amazing Grace.

This is my new BFF Mikayla, who is one of the most beautiful little girls I have ever gotten to know! (And yes… we like to be a little silly 🙂 )

We’re really excited and pumped because the Mississippi Food Network has donated tons of snacks, sandwich foods, and drinks to feed our Alta Woods babies. Through this, we are able to build a trust with these kids in order to continually share Christ with them.

So, if anyone asks me how my summer at MC is going, this is the answer I give them. I hope this is encouragement for those who are entering MC this fall to get plugged in somewhere local, because there are definitely some great places to do so. I highly encourage you to check out Alta Woods Baptist in Jackson this fall.

Much love,

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
