This year, Taylor Townsend is representing Mississippi College in the Miss Mississippi Pageant. Along with 42 other contestants, Taylor will compete this week for the title of Miss Mississippi and the chance to compete for Miss America 2013.
Although I am sure Taylor Townsend would love to win this title, she has other ambitions that motivate her in her pursuit of the crown. Taylor says, ” I desire to begin each day with a real passion to make a difference SOMEWHERE for SOMEONE in SOMEWAY that really matters.”
Through her platform, Taylor has chosen to stand for the awareness of human trafficking through the Blue Heart Campaign Against Human Trafficking. Human trafficking, for those of you who might not know, is the practice of trading and selling persons as slaves, typically slaves in the global “sex trade.” She says, “The Miss Mississippi title, and more strategically, the Miss America title, would give me the opportunity to lead an awareness campaign to help people recognize and break the chains of human trafficking in our state and across our nation.”
The Blue Heart Campaign is an international organization that strives to eradicate the global epidemic known as human trafficking. Initiated by the UNODC, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the campaign functions through the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons and awareness launches. This organization is working with governments and non-governments alike to raise widespread awareness. Blue Heart reaches out to people in positions of leadership to spread the word about and inspire action against this heinous crime.
By taking up this organization, Taylor Townsend is dedicating herself to serve this campaign by acting as a spokesperson in whatever title she receives. In interviews, Taylor has told of her passion against this “$32 billion industry focused on treating women and children like property.” Taylor says that she plans to support the Blue Heart Campaign boldly. Mississippi College has the honor of having two of their current students entering into the Miss Mississippi Pageant. Danielle Ashley, currently Miss Jones County, is also a contestant. She is competing alongside Taylor Townsend this week, with her platform being “Take Care of Your Heart,” which is a Heart Disease Awareness and Prevention organization.
The Miss Mississippi Pageant, held in Vicksburg, begins tonight, June 27, at 8:00 PM. Most of us probably are not fortunate enough to have tickets, but we can watch the live stream of the entire pageant. Click here to watch and cheer own our local contestants as they compete this week!
